Report: Aussies hone in on ex-England coach as Langer’s D-Day awaits

2022-01-13T09:32+11:00

Former England coach Trevor Bayliss is reportedly the favourite to succeed Justin Langer as Australia’s head coach should the former opener not have his contract extended after the Ashes.

Bayliss, 59, was coach of England from 2015 to 2019, leading the nation to World Cup glory at home before resigning later that year.

While Langer has improved his chances of retaining the role following Australia’s Ashes and T20 World Cup success, The Guardian’s Ali Martin says Bayliss is the preferred candidate among current support staff and senior players.

According to the report, Langer’s methods behinds the scenes have been questioned despite the recent on field success.

Australia’s players held talks with Langer following the 2-1 home series loss to India last summer, which saw the coach adopt a more relaxed method.

Langer is currently under contract until June this year, and Australia is committed to the coach until then.

It is believed the role could be split between Bayliss and current assistant Andrew McDonald if Cricket Australia go down that path.

Bayliss is the current coach of the Sydney Thunder in the BBL, and he’s previously said the only full-time head coach role he’d consider in the future would be the Australian job.
