Players feeling anxious as Big Bash future remains uncertain

2022-01-07T12:45+11:00

Sydney Sixers paceman Jackson Bird has revealed that he and his teammates are feeling uncertain about the future of the Big Bash season as well as their own personal health.

The Sydney Sixers are the latest side to have positive cases within their camp as COVID continues to disrupt the season.

“There’s a little bit of anxiety”, Bird said to 1170 SEN Breakfast.

“In terms of the schedule but it’s probably more anxiety around COVID.

“(Everyone is thinking) when are you going to get it.

“It feels like just a matter of time before the whole squad gets it.”

In the past week, COVID has roared through the entire Big Bash League with several games being postponed.

The Melbourne Stars have been impacted the most, with the majority of their squad, including skipper Glenn Maxwell, testing positive to the virus.

The Stars have had their match against the Adelaide Strikers postponed as players were deemed physically and mentally unfit to play after completing their isolation period.

Reports emerged on Thursday that Cricket Australia are establishing a COVID bubble in Melbourne to limit the amount of interruptions and to allow for easier rescheduling if needed.

Bird believes that contracting COVID is an inevitably and will have a serious impact on player performance.

“I hope I’m wrong, but that’s just the feeling I’ve got at the moment.

“You’ve got to put it out of your mind which can be a little bit hard to do.

“It’s pretty weird times.”

The Sydney Sixers are scheduled to play the Perth Scorchers in Coffs Harbour on Sunday.
