England are likely to recall veteran seamer Stuart Broad at the expense of Ollie Robinson for the fourth Test, according to The Evening Standard’s Will Macpherson.
Broad has missed out on the luxury of bowling on the green pitches in Brisbane and Melbourne, so far playing just the one Test in Adelaide on a flat wicket.
The 35-year-old took 1/73 and 1/27 on a pitch that admittedly offered very little for quick bowlers, even under lights with the pink ball.
Meanwhile, Robinson is the touring side’s leading wicket-taker with nine poles as the only English bowler to play all three Tests, however it’s understood he was sore after Melbourne.
The 28-year-old sent down only 19 overs in the Boxing Day Test, but 2021 was his first year of international cricket and he played eight Tests in seven months to earn a break.
Broad is widely regarded as one of the best fast bowlers the English have ever had, and in a column for The Mail over the weekend he admitted his frustrations of not being able to influence the Ashes.
“As a wobble-seam bowler, I feel as though I missed out on two of the best wobble-seam pitches in Australia. Only playing once has made this a very disappointing trip, one that has not met my personal expectations,” he wrote.
“The biggest frustration is losing the Ashes, being 3-0 down and feeling like I've not really done anything. Not being able, as an experienced player, to influence a series while it's live is tough.”
England are not expected to change their batting order that has failed dismally throughout the series, instead backing in their top seven on what may be more of a batter-friendly pitch at the SCG.
The fourth Test begins on Wednesday, England having already lost the five-Test series.
