Australian batsman Travis Head tests positive for COVID-19

2021-12-31T12:05+11:00

Australian Test batsman Travis Head has tested positive for COVID-19.

Peter Lalor reported for The Australian on Friday morning that a player in the camp had returned a positive PCR test.

Lalor then tweeted that reserve batsman Usman Khawaja is set to play in the fourth Test.

A short time later, Cricket Australia released a statement confirming Head is the positive case.

"Head is asymptomatic and will remain in Melbourne and isolate with his partner for seven days in line with Victorian Government Health requirements," the press release confirmed.

"He will be unavailable for selection for the fourth Vodafone men’s Ashes Test, starting at the SCG on January 5.

"The remainder of the Australian squad, their families and the support staff have undergone PCR and RAT tests this morning. Both the Australian and England squads are expected to separately travel to Sydney as planned today.

"As a precautionary measure Mitchell Marsh, Nic Maddinson and Josh Inglis have joined the Australian squad as additional cover."

A CA spokesperson added “we anticipate that he will be available to play in the fifth Vodafone men’s Ashes Test in Hobart."

Lalor says there is a concern around another member of the team who has spent time with Head over recent days.

"I heard this morning that the plane was delayed, that was because Head returned a positive test," he told SEN Mornings.

"They ran another round of tests for all the players and apparently (they) have all come up negative.

"There are concerns for another player who was with Head at dinner two nights ago.

"I think they're trying to get a ruling on whether that player is deemed a close contact."
