Andy Murray will make a much-anticipated return to the Australian Open next month after accepting a wildcard into the main draw.
Just three years after he feared a debilitating hip injury would force him into an early retirement, the five-time runner up will return to Melbourne Park for the first major of 2022.
Murray was also offered a wildcard into the 2021 tournament, but was forced to pull out at short notice after contracting COVID shortly before boarding a charter flight to Melbourne.
Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said he was thrilled to welcome the fan favourite back to Melbourne Park.
“As a five-time finalist, Andy Murray has had so many memorable moments at the Australian Open," he said in a statement.
"He's renowned for his fighting spirit, passion and love of the game and I'm delighted to welcome him back to Melbourne in January.
"His heroic exploits have made him a firm fan favourite here at Melbourne Park."
The 34-year-old, who is currently ranked 134th in the world, will compete in his 14th Australian Open.
