England were again their own worst enemy in Adelaide on Day 3, being bowled out after another disastrous batting collapse.
Captain Joe Root (62) and Dawid Malan (80) again were able to combine for a strong third wicket stand but their departures in the second session was the last of the resistance.
England would go from 3/150 at the time of Malan’s dismissal to all out for 236, well behind Australia’s first innings total of 9/473.
Mitchell Starc (4/37), Nathan Lyon (3/58) and Cameron Green (2/24) did the damage with both Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood out of the side as the Aussie attack proved too strong.
With a lead of more than 200, stand-in captain Steve Smith opted not to enforce the follow-on, giving his bowlers a chance to rest up.
Despite losing David Warner for 13 late in the day’s play, Australia went to stumps at 1/45 with a mammoth lead of 282 runs.
Australia will look to build on that lead and set the tourists a big total as they look to claim a 2-0 series lead.
Day 4 at the Adelaide Oval will begin at 3pm (AEDT) on Sunday.
