Slow over rates not the only issue facing England’s bowling attack

2021-12-14T15:38+11:00

The over rate was not the only issue with England's bowling attack in the first Ashes Test in Brisbane as the side also struggled with ball in hand.

SEN Test Cricket's Peter Lalor believes drastic changes will need to be made if they hope to level the series in Adelaide.

England are primed to welcome back the experienced duo of Stuart Broad and James Anderson for the pink-ball test, and Lalor expects that Chris Woakes will be dropped in their place.

Ollie Robinson was the loan bright spot with the ball for the English in the first Test, but his fitness status remains a concern, as does that of Ben Stokes who hurt his knee in Brisbane.

“He didn’t look quite right, he’s not that fit, none of them are,” Lalor said on SEN Mornings.

England’s spinners battled at the Gabba, so much so that Lalor called for captain Joe Root to see more overs and for Jack Leach to be sat to bring some new life to the spinning attack.

“They’ve got Dom Bess in the sheds, they could bring him in,” he added.

“If it’s not Leach you still have that issue about the slow bowlers.”

The discussion surrounding England’s slow over rates in the first Test at the Gabba is sure to add further pressure to their bowlers.

The ICC – who is adamant in pushing slow over rates out of the sport - fined each player $27,000 and the team was stripped of five World Test Championship points for the unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Lalor noted: “It’s been a problem all year.”

“I reckon the answer to whether these fines and penalty points works will be in Australia’s performance in the next 12 months, we haven’t got to see them since the last time but we knew what the over rates cost them.”

England will be looking to get it right with the swiftness of their over rates as well as their overall bowling when they take the crease for the second Test which kicks off on Thursday.
