Why Mitchell must stay at fullback amid position switch chatter

2021-12-09T15:19+11:00

South Sydney superstar Latrell Mitchell has hinted at a potential position switch for the 2022 season.

Mitchell, 24, plays as a fullback for the Rabbitohs but has featured at both club and representative level in the centres in stunning fashion.

With the emergence of Blake Taaffe as another fullback at the club, Mitchell hinted that he could be interested in shifting to make room for the youngster.

“I'm pretty interested in another position but I won't go there yet,” Mitchell told reporters.

“I'm joking … I love fullback, I just enjoy it. I think I've got a big impact at the back.”

While Mitchell said he was joking in putting forth a position switch, chatter has come from his statement with many believing a potential move into the halves could be on the cards due to Adam Reynolds’ departure.

Despite this, The Daily Telegraph’s Michael Carayannis believes Mitchell should stay put as a number one.

“No, he’ll be fullback surely,” Carayannis said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“Surely Latrell Mitchell stays in the number one jersey at South Sydney at the moment.

“I can’t see him returning to the centres, I think he gets a little bit lost there.

“I know they’ve lost Adam Reynolds but that combination of Latrell sweeping out the back alongside Cody Walker was the most devastating in the competition at times last season.

“So, I can’t see him moving out of the fullback role right now.”

Mitchell will return in Round 1 of 2022 after serving his six-week suspension for his hit on Sydney’s Joey Manu last season.
