NRL CEO Andrew Abdo has suggested that the competition could adopt a new transfer window as criticism grows at the current system.
This off-season has seen several star players sign contracts with other teams despite having a year left with their current club.
Players such as Brandon Smith have also shopped the market and openly expressed their desire to move teams.
SEN's Scott Sattler said the comments from Abdo are a welcome relief and long overdue.
“(The NRL transfer window) in the last two years, it’s probably been exposed even more,” Sattler said on SEN 1170 Mornings.
“It upsets fans, potential corporate sponsors and your rugby league purists.
“There’s got to be another alternative.”
2022 is the final year of the existing bargaining agreement for players and Abdo will sit at the NRL Commission meeting on Friday to discuss the matter.
Abdo said the RLPA, the Commission and the clubs will think “innovatively and differently” in finding a solution.
“I think we will get another alternative in two to three years,” Sattler told SEN.
Sattler believes that having a player signed to another club whilst still having a contract to fulfill does nothing but alienate supporters.
“Look at Reed Mahoney. He could be the player of the year next year at Parramatta,” Sattler said.
“That just angers fans even more knowing that he’s not going to be there in 2023.”
Sattler proposes a return to the original June 30 deadline for clubs to confirm their playing roster as he feels it is the simplest solution.
“There are a couple of trade windows that we should have but that final day should be June 30,” he said.
“Don’t announce players before June 30 for what is quite frankly, the good of the game.”
