Sattler rates the Dolphins’ first major signing

2021-12-01T15:31+11:00

Melbourne Storm forward Felise Kaufusi officially became the Dolphins’ first major signing last week, inking a three-year deal from 2023 with the new franchise.

The 29-year-old is a two-time premiership winner with the Storm and a 12-time Queensland representative, making him a genuine marquee signing for the Redcliffe based club.

Despite this, Scott Sattler thinks the Dolphins need to add more star players around him to “strike a real blow”.

“(Kaufusi’s signing is) a good one from a cultural point of view,” Sattler said on SEN 1170 Drive with Joel and Fletch.

“He’s a proven winner, but I think it’s fair to say his form has been waning over the last couple of years.

“I’m a fan of Felise Kaufusi’s, but he’s turning in 30 in May next year, and you really need to strike a blow in your first few signings.

“Kalyn Ponga is still on the market, Api Koroisau is still on the market, there’s still a few that can strike a real blow.”

Although Sattler rates what Kaufusi brings to the table, he thinks rival clubs will only sit up and “take a little more notice” when a bigger name signs on.

“While I think Felise has had an amazing career, I’m not sure he’s the player that gives the absolute confidence that the new team coming into the comp is going to be successful from day one,” Sattler said.

“Great from a cultural, leadership and he’ll sing from the same hymn sheet as Wayne Bennett, but they’ve got to get a Ponga, a Brandon Smith, Api Koroisau and or Junior Paulo for everyone to sit up and take a little more notice.”

The Dolphins play their first game in Round 1, 2023.

They’ll hope to make more signings this off-season in the build up to their official NRL start.
