“PR dream”: New Test captain Cummins the “all-round package”

With the Ashes now a week away, the Aussies are focused and despite Tim Paine’s resignation as captain, the squad is confident that Pat Cummins has what it takes to fill the shoes.

Travis Head, who is fighting for a spot in the XI, raved about the leadership and consistency Cummins brings to the group.

“He’s consistent, you know what you’re going to get from him,” Head told Sportsday.

“He's a pretty all-round package - a PR dream.

“He's just so consistent in his behaviour and the way he builds relationships.”

The Aussies are steadfast in their support of the new skipper and are more than willing to guide him through any potential growing pains he may experience in the early stages.

“We’ve definitely got a great group of guys he can lean into, and we can help him along the way if he needs it,” Head added.

Although Paine will not appear in this year’s Ashes, Head is sure that the team will resume conversations with the former captain in due time.

“I think we’ll just let the dust settle and I’ll speak to him over the next week,” he said.

With selectors still deciding between Head and Usman Khawaja for the No.5 spot in the batting line-up, the 27-year-old made a case for himself but admitted that selectors cannot go wrong with either.

“'Uz' (Khawaja) has had a fantastic year, and I’ve come into touch in the last week … whoever they go with we’re going to be in great touch and that’s the most important part, making sure we start the series extremely well,” Head said.

The first Test starts on December 8 at the Gabba.
