Head grabs final opportunity to impress national selectors

2021-11-25T18:10+11:00

Travis Head has notched up a second century of the Sheffield Shield season in his last chance to impress Ashes selectors before the first Test.

Furthermore, his biggest competitor for the no. 5 spot, Usman Khawaja, is the man he’s got to thank for the opportunity.

Head made 101 on Thursday in South Australia’s clash with Queensland before being caught behind, after Khawaja, as his opposing captain, enforced the follow on.

The South Australian skipper had only made eight runs in the first innings as his team collapsed to just 102, however his second innings century came off 149 balls and included 11 boundaries.

Khawaja couldn’t improve his Ashes claims after four runs in the first innings of the state match, however Australia's current no. 3 Marnus Labuschagne hit a century.

Head and Khawaja were both named in last week’s Australia’s Ashes squad and appear to be fighting for the middle order spot, after Marcus Harris was confirmed as the nation’s opener.

The Ashes begins on December 8 at Brisbane.
