Cricket Australia boss refuses to guarantee Langer future

2021-11-18T07:17+11:00

Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley has refused to guarantee Justin Langer’s future as Australian head coach post the Ashes.

Langer recently guided Australia to their first T20 World Cup title after reports of player discontent in the months leading up to the tournament.

Hockley isn’t looking too far ahead when it comes to Langer’s future with the former Test opener’s contract due to expire in the middle of 2022.

The CA boss will sit down with Langer after this summer’s Ashes series.

“We’ve been very clear all along and what we’ve said is that we’re very focused on these upcoming campaigns,” Hockley told Sportsday.

“We’re one down and it doesn’t get any bigger than the Ashes, so certainly we’re all completely focused on that job, and then we’ll sit down and review and see where we go from there.

“JL has done a magnificent job.

“The thing about this campaign is the leaders within the group have sat down, there’s been some really honest conversations, lots of preparation, very clear on roles and responsibilities and every single person from JL, the assistants and all the players, they’ve stepped up and they’ve delivered.

“What we said is all we can ask is everyone fulfills their potential and I think they certainly did that.”

Former Australian captain Michael Clarke believes Langer could step down as head coach if Australia wins the Ashes.

Australia announced a 15-man squad for the first two Tests against England on Wednesday. The first Test in Brisbane gets underway on December 8.
