Hawthorn issues Maginness update after positive COVID test

2021-11-10T16:29+11:00

Hawthorn football boss Rob McCartney says youngster Finn Maginness is in “pretty good spirits” after testing positive to COVID-19.

The 20-year-old fell ill on Tuesday morning after training at Waverley Park on Monday and is currently in isolation.

“Yesterday, Finn woke up feeling a little unwell, a bit of a sore throat and a little bit of a headache,” McCartney told SEN Drive.

“He’s the poster boy for then doing exactly what he should have done.

“He isolated himself from the rest of his family at that time, rang our club doctor in Liam West, arranged to get a COVID test immediately, and then returned to his isolation.

“He’s done absolutely everything that he should have done and then today what has come about is that test has proven to be positive, so he continues his isolation

“He’s feeling not at 100 per cent, but just mild cold-like symptoms. He’s in pretty good spirits.”

McCartney said several close contacts to Maginness were identified by the club and they will continue isolating for seven days after returning negative tests.

“He woke up yesterday with his symptoms, on Monday he was at the club, so what we’ve done is we’ve gone through our video footage,” he said.

“We’ve got a small number of players and a small number of our football department staff that we’ve been more or less overally cautious with.

“We’ve identified people that we think in the best interests of both their own health, their friend’s and family’s and the general community’s health that it’s important they isolate at the moment.

“They had tests yesterday because we knew Finn wasn’t feeling well yesterday, all their results have come back negative, but they will continue to isolate for this period of time.”

Maginness, a father-son selection at Hawthorn, has played three games since he was chosen with pick No.29 in the 2019 draft.
