Nature Strip has claimed the $2 million 2021 Darley Sprint Classic in a breathtaking performance, backing up his big win in The Everest last month.
It’s James McDonald's ninth win over the Flemington carnival and further confirms Nature Strip’s reputation as the best sprinter in the world.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding justified his short $1.20 favourite quote to win by four lengths
Swats That ran home well into second for Hugh Bowman, while Bella Nipotina under Jye McNeil was further back in third.
“Nature Strip was nothing short of brilliant today, he’s had a great campaign and he’s just a marvellous horse,” McDonald told Racing.com post-race.
“We have (improved together), it’s a learning curve every preparation we have with him, and there’s obviously great expectations for him every time he steps out.
“When he’s a short-priced favourite we’ve fallen into the trap of worrying about the race too much instead of worrying about the horse, but now it’s completely about the horse, and what will be will be.”
A potential trip to Royal Ascot in England may now be on the cards for Nature Strip, with managing owner Rod Lyons reportedly keen to travel the horse overseas.
