Verry Elleegant is your 2021 Melbourne Cup champion.
Trained by Chris Waller and ridden by James McDonald, Verry Elleegant raced herself into history at Flemington today.
The six-year-old becomes the first mare to win the race since Makybe Diva and with that, gives Waller and McDonald their first ever win in the great race.
Heavily backed favourite Incentivise finished second with import Spanish Mission finishing third.
An emotional McDonald paid tribute to this wonder mare after the race.
“I love her to bits,” McDonald told Channel 10.
“She’s been so good to me.
“She was relaxed out there. She was relaxed the whole way. When I looked at the 600m, I was blowing kisses to her the whole way.
“I don’t know. I just can’t believe what’s just happened.
“I never thought I would ever win one, you know. I always dreamed of winning one, but, it’s so hard to win.“
Verry Elleegant paid $16 and won by four lengths.
