Former All Black Israel Dagg has questioned the Hurricanes' recruitment process following Moana Pasifika’s signing of Kiwi young gun Lincoln McClutchie.
McClutchie, who is originally from the Hurricanes' region, became Pasifika’s ninth signing of their inaugural squad, leaving Dagg unimpressed by the club's scouting and retention.
“The thing that baffles me is one, how has it taken this long for someone like him (Lincoln McClutchie) to get picked up in a Super Rugby side, and we’ve had to wait for an extra team to be a part of Super Rugby (to be) given the opportunity?” Dagg questioned on SENZ Breakfast.
“And two, how the Hurricanes, he’s part of the Hurricanes' region, how the Hurricanes who have lost Beauden Barrett, (Connor) Garden-Bachop, they’ve needed a 10, how they have let him slip under the radar … and it hasn’t been just him.
“I just want to know how they (the Hurricanes) recruit, what’s their recruiting process?”
Dagg listed a number of stars, some including Aaron Smith, Brad Weber, Marino Mikaele-Tu'u and himself, who are from the region, but were never picked up by the side.
“The list could go on … Israel Dagg,” he laughed.
“I might be a bit sore here, but you think of the talent that has been in the regions that has slipped away from the Hurricanes.
“You think of it, and you think of the powerhouse the Hurricanes could have been, and potentially can be if they get the recruiting right.”
