Geelong praised for sounding out “unbelievable asset” to work alongside Scott

2021-10-19T13:25+11:00

Jimmy Bartel and David King have both endorsed Geelong's move to sound out former Fremantle and St Kilda coach Ross Lyon.

According to the Herald Sun, the Cats have recently spoken with Lyon about a either a coaching director or strategy member of the club’s footy department.

Bartel said it was a move that made sense for his former club considering Scott’s links with Lyon.

“It makes a lot of sense...before Chris Scott was hired at the Cats he was at Fremantle,” he said on Sportsday.

“Another connection point is Simon Lloyd who was at Freo as well. Those three have all been together in a previous footballing life.

“He’s a very bright football brain, we know that about ‘Ross the Boss’. That’s why everyone was talking about him last year for being a head coach.”

Geelong is undergoing a period of significant change off the field, with assistant coaches Matthew Knights, Matthew Scarlett and Corey Enright all departing, while Steve Hocking has recently taken over from Brian Cook as the club's new CEO.

David King said Lyon, who was courted for Carlton’s coaching role before he later withdrew from the process, would be an “unbelievable asset” for the Cats.

“Any which way you can get Ross Lyon would be an unbelievable asset for your football club,” he said on SEN Drive.

“Wouldn’t you be a better football club for having that sort of intel walk into your premises?”
