The Eagle still in limbo as trade period deadline nears

2021-10-12T14:51+11:00

Tall Eagle Jarrod Brander remains in trade limbo and is hoping for a late suitor to emerge, according to his manager David Trotter.

The 22-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at West Coast, forced to play out of position on the wing for majority of his career.

After managing just 22 games across his four seasons at the club, Brander has decided to look for a new home.

Trotter confirmed his client and West Coast have come to an agreement where both parties are happy to explore a trade, however Brander is yet to get a major nibble of interest.

“I’m not sure at the moment, I’m hopeful something happens in this period, I’ve had a few clubs that say they’re having a bit of a look, but it’s getting pretty late,” he told AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Exchange when asked where Brander would be next year.

“Carlton showed some genuine interest, (but Lewis Young went there instead), if that didn’t happen (Brander joining the Blues) would have been a good chance.

“(The Eagles) have got some real depth in the key position area, he’s played wing a lot over the last two or three years, and the 6’4” wingman type hasn’t worked a lot over the years.

While the 2017 first-round draft pick is keen to shift clubs, he’s accepted that the Eagles may be his best shot to continue his AFL career and would head back to the club if he can't secure a trade.

Brander is out of contract with the club, but Trotter believes he can go back if that’s how the situation unfolds.

“He would, he wants to continue his AFL career,” Trotter said on the potential of returning to the Eagles if a trade isn’t completed.

“There wouldn’t be too many people out there who think he’s not good enough for an AFL list.

“Both parties, in terms of Jarrod and the club, have said, ‘Look, with where you sit, it’s probably not the right fit in terms of where you play for us’, so if there was an opportunity somewhere else, I think they’d look at it.”

As to where he plays his best football, the young Eagle’s 195cm frame and strong fitness base makes him a good key forward, according to his manager.

“I think ideally (he is) that tall forward, he’s not big enough to be your number one key man, but as a second or third tall forward,” Trotter said.

“I remember seeing him play under 16s up at the Gold Coast, his size and the way he moves and kicks it, I think he can be pretty damaging as that.

“I think the stuff on the wing has really built up his tank and his running is elite for a player of his size.”

Brander has until 7.30 pm on Wednesday night for a deal to go through, the AFL Trade Period officially closing at that time.
