Former Essendon spearhead Matthew Lloyd has gone to the drawing board and compiled a list of his top five greatest players to have played for more than one AFL club.
Speaking on AFL Trade Radio’s The Morning Trade, Lloyd told co-host Kane Cornes that he struggled as the list of multi-club players is absolutely stacked.
“The list is that good that Shaun Burgoyne missed it and he plated 157 games for Port and 250 for Hawthorn,” Lloyd said.
“Eddie Betts missed out and even Gavin Wanganeen who I loved, had 127 games for the Bombers and 173 for Port and he missed as well.”
See the full list below:
5. Patrick Dangerfield (Adelaide and Geelong)
“At five I’ve gone Patrick Dangerfield. So Patty’s played 154 games for the Crows and 121 games for Geelong so far," Lloyd said.
"He’s won three best and fairest’s at the Crows and All-Australians, he’s won eight - five of them at Geelong. So that just shows how good he has been for both clubs.”
4. Lance Franklin (Hawthorn and Sydney)
Lloyd: "I’ve got Lance Franklin at number four. So he’s played 182 games for Hawthorn (with) 580 goals and he’s played 136 games for the Swans (with) 415 goals. So I’ve got him at number four."
Cornes: “Where was he better?”
Lloyd: “I’d say Hawthorn. That period where he kicked 100 (goals in a season), absolute rockstar,” said Lloyd.
Cornes: “Do you see him becoming a legend one day?”
Lloyd: “Yes. I think if he’s not one I find it hard to see many others of the current day who do become one.
“I think he should go down as one of the top 20 players to have played the game.”
3. Gary Ablett Jnr (Geelong and Gold Coast)
Lloyd: “I’ll go Gary Ablett Jnr at three. He played 192 games for Geelong, he played 110 games for the Suns but he won four best and fairest’s and a Brownlow, so he was pretty special there.
"He won two best and fairest’s in his time at Geelong, so unbelievable."
Cornes: “Maybe he doesn’t get enough credit...they (Gold Coast) were only ever relevant when he was there. What he did there was as good as anything that he did at Geelong."
2. Chris Judd (West Coast and Carlton)
Lloyd: “Number two I’ve got Chris Judd. Awesome, unbelievable player for West Coast and I think he was better for West Coast than he was for Cartlon but he was still awesome for Carlton.
“He won two West Coast best and fairest’s, he won three best and fairest’s for Carlton and he won a Brownlow at both clubs.
“As did, I think Ablett might’ve won a Brownlow for both clubs as well so that’s why that was tricky for those two. But I think he (Judd) just made such a huge impact at both footy clubs."
Cornes: “He was certainly a more explosive player and more of a damaging player at West Coast."
1. Tony Lockett (St Kilda and Sydney)
“Tony Lockett number one. So 183 games for the St.Kilda Football Club with a whopping - in a poor side for most of it - 898 goals for ‘Plugger’," Lloyd said.
“Then he went to Sydney, he only played 98 games but he kicked 462 goals in that time. So just a phenomenal player for two football clubs and just a legend in the Hall of Fame.”
