The prospective coach Carlton would be "lucky" to get

Bob Murphy believes Carlton would be “lucky” to get Daniel Giansiracusa to be their next coach, after The Age’s Jake Niall reported earlier this week the Blues would interview the former Bulldog.

Giansiracusa became an assistant at the Bulldogs in 2015 before gaining his own team in 2019 as head coach of VFL affiliate Footscray. He joined the Bombers at the start of 2021 and has impressed as a backline coach.

As the prospective senior coach’s former teammate, Murphy says he has seen enough to know that the 39-year old would be a fantastic addition at Carlton.

“The Blues would be lucky to get him,” he told SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“What I can tell you is since the age of 25, we were in the middle of our footy careers, he had his eyes set on coaching, maybe even before that.

“That was when he started putting in the work and the steps to get his own team, he was at the Bulldogs for a long, long team and then he switched over to Essendon, he’s had a massive impact as their defensive coach.

“He’s as ready as a 39-year old could be.”

Carlton particularly struggled with their defence throughout the season, with too many players appearing uncommitted to an accountable mentality.

However, the former Bulldogs captain believes his old teammate has the attributes to implement a strong defensive structure, as he has done at Essendon.

“He’s always been a very organised, process-driven hard worker, a proper hard worker,” Murphy said.

“That’s what I do remember of playing footy with him, he hated the day off.

“But he’s also an Italian, he’s got the fiery blood.”

Giansiracusa's reported sounding out highlights Carlton’s desire to look at a range of candidates, with head coaching experience not necessarily on the radar.

President Luke Sayers has previously said the Blues will look to announce their new coach in the weeks after the Grand Final on September 25.
