Why Gerard Healy turned down Carlton coaching subcommittee approach

2021-08-31T19:20+10:00

Gerard Healy has revealed that previous public commentary on Carlton’s coaching position was the reason he knocked back a role to be on their coaching subcommittee.

As reported by AFL Media on Tuesday, Healy was asked by the Blues to be part of the panel to select David Teague successor.

But Healy said that after taking time to reflect on the approach, he ultimately turned it down after saying publicly on radio that he believed Ross Lyon was the frontrunner for the role if Alastair Clarkson wasn’t available.

“It was an approach by phone and a private conversation, I’d hope others at Carlton keep it private,” he said on Sportsday.

“I was asked whether I would consider it – I considered it for 24 hours until I realised that on the Friday beforehand I had a strong conversation with Gerard Whateley (on AFL Nation), where I said that if Alastair Clarkson wasn’t (in the running for the job), it has to be Ross Lyon.

“I had made my position completely clear and I don’t think you need to go into a process if you’ve already made up your mind.”

Carlton is poised to announce the makeup of the subcommittee in the coming days, who will convene to decide who will become the club’s new senior coach.
