The top 7 most polarising players in footy

2021-08-31T10:55+10:00

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has named his top seven most polarising players in footy.

It comes after Cody Weightman’s divisive four-goal display in the Western Bulldogs’ Elimination Final win over Essendon on Sunday.

Lloyd’s list also comes amid Toby Greene’s Tribunal hearing for making intentional umpire contact during GWS’ thrilling win over Sydney in Saturday’s cut-throat final.

“I looked up these names on Google and I figured pretty strongly in some of these lists,” Lloyd told Sportsday on Monday night.

“I’ve obviously left myself off this list.”

See Lloyd’s top seven most polarising players in footy below:

7. Lindsay Thomas (North Melbourne and Port Adelaide)

6. Brendon Goddard (St Kilda and Essendon)

“Loved by his own, but often maligned by the opposition.”

5. Hayden Ballantyne (Fremantle)

“I remember Matty Scarlett said, ‘I’m doing this for everyone’ and he just whacked Hayden Ballantyne.”

4. Joel Selwood (Geelong)

“As much as he’s respected and admired, he’s polarising.

“He frustrates some with his ‘Selwood Shrug’.”

3. Tony Liberatore (Western Bulldogs)

“You’d love to have him on your team, but you didn’t like him if you’re the opposition.”

2. Toby Greene (GWS)

“The man that will be spoken about a lot tomorrow (Tuesday).”

1. Wayne Carey (North Melbourne and Adelaide)

“No.1 I think is the ‘Duck’, Wayne Carey.”
