Lyon responds to Langdon’s shock coaching style comments

2021-08-29T16:11+10:00

Ross Lyon has confirmed he was contacted by Ed Langdon after the Melbourne wingman made headline making remarks on his coaching style last night.

Having coached Langdon for five years at Fremantle, Lyon said he heard Langdon’s comments that he preferred Simon Goodwin’s coaching style.

Speaking on AFL Nation after the Demons’ qualifying final win, Langdon said “it’s nice” to have a coach “as cool and calm” as Goodwin having experienced the opposite with Lyon.

Langdon also added that his ex-coach would yell at players when they didn’t “look Ross in the eye” during meetings.

While Lyon confirmed Langdon reached out on Sunday morning to say he made a poor choice of words and that the comments were taken out of context, he said he’s happy to “take the feedback” if it was “legitimate”.

“If it’s legitimate and that’s what he meant, and it was all seriousness, well I’m on a journey of growth and a growth mindset, I would take the feedback,” Lyon said on Triple M.

“I know Ed, he’s really dry. I’m not here to defend myself or Ed.

“Ed can speak for himself...he was one of my favourites.”

As the favourite for the vacant Carlton coaching job, Lyon said it’s “exciting” to be a part of the conversation.

“It’s come to my front door, I haven’t gone out searching for anything.” Lyon said.

“I’m really happy to let the river flow here ... There’s a long way to go, I want to respect the process.

“It’s exciting to be in the conversation of an AFL club.”

Lyon last coached at AFL level with Fremantle in 2019, having gone to three Grand Finals in a five-year span with the Saints and Dockers.
