“It’s a nice change”: Dees wingman’s parting shot at Ross Lyon

2021-08-29T09:29+10:00

Melbourne wingman Ed Langdon has opened up on his relationship with his former coach Ross Lyon, revealing he didn’t enjoy aspects of his method during his time Fremantle.

Lyon, who is now the favourite to coach Carlton next season, coached Langdon for five years at the Dockers until 2019 when the outside runner requested a trade home to Victoria.

Following the Demons’ 33-point over Brisbane in Saturday night's qualifying final, Langdon told AFL Nation that it was a “nice change” to play under Simon Goodwin compared to Lyon.

“I’ve come from five years of the Ross Lyon method, so it’s absolutely a nice change to have someone as cool, calm and collected as Goody,” Langdon said on AFL Nation.

“I don’t think I’ve heard him raise his voice since I’ve been at the club.”

Langdon said Lyon would yell at players when they didn’t look him at the eye in meetings.

“Coming over from Freo, where if you don’t look Ross in the eye at a meeting, he starts yelling at you,” Langdon added.

“So, it’s been a nice change.”

While Langdon’s comments caused a stir in the football world, former Carlton star Matthew Lappin believes Lyon is “exactly” the coach the club needs.

“Langdon’s comments say as much about him as they do Ross,” Lappin tweeted.

“Ross is exactly the coach Carlton needs right now.”

Although some may question if Lyon’s the right fit for the Blues, his coaching record speaks for itself with a 57 per cent win/loss record across 13 seasons with St Kilda and Fremantle.
