Brownlow medallist backs out of favour forward to find new suitor

Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy believes out of favour Collingwood forward Mason Cox will find another club, but he should be prepared to take a pay cut.

The 30-year-old has played just seven games this season and recently said publicly he would look to explore his options during the upcoming trade period.

Healy said Cox, who is out of contract at the end of the season, still had a future at AFL level as a dual forward and ruckman.

“I think Mason (Cox) will land up somewhere else,” he said on AFL Nation.

“I think he needs to get used to the idea that he’s not going to be on $500,000 or $600,000 (per son), it’s probably going to be more like $200,000 with incentives if he plays.

“But I still think as a second ruckman and a forward, I still think there’s a spot for him.”

Collingwood football boss Graham Wright provided an extensive club update in a Sportsday interview on Thursday night, with Healy said that the Pies were well-placed for future success with him at the club.

“You listen to Graham Wright…people talk about getting all the pillars in place and I think they have a pillar in place,” he said.

“Talking to him, you’d be really happy if Graham Wright turned up at your football club as your footy manager.

“They’re in no hurry to appoint a coach, maybe they’re waiting for the finals (to end) so no one gets spat out and I think that’s a smart way of going about it.

“They know they’re in for a pretty significant rebuild, but I felt listening to Graham Wright that they’re in very good hands.”
