SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund says Collingwood’s ongoing search for a senior coach is centred on someone who wants to “go on the journey” longer-term with the club.
The Pies are currently in the final weeks of the concluding the process to appoint Nathan Buckley’s permanent successor, with Robert Harvey to finish his stint as interim coach after the game against Essendon on Sunday.
Edmund said Collingwood wouldn’t necessarily appoint the most high-profile candidate and would instead look to someone that would grow alongside the club’s list.
“The net has been cast really wide (at Collingwood),” he said on SEN’s Crunch Time.
“Don Pyke is right up there as well from what you hear, but they’re keen for someone to go on the journey with them.
“Perhaps it’s someone that doesn’t have the high-profile standing of some of the other guys we’ve spoken about.
“List management wise, they still don’t have (a list manager) and there’s been all sort of rumours about Brad Lloyd (taking the role) and that’s been kicked down the road a bit.”
Gerard Whateley believes current Hawthorn assistant coach Craig McRae is looming as one of the favourites for the role.
“Craig McRae is the man of the last 24 hours,” he said.
“Jordan Lewis felt last night (on AFL Nation) that he’s clearly the front-runner for the job from what he’s heard around those circles at Hawthorn and he was really excited about that prospect.”
