Premiership Tiger calls time, veteran to depart Blues

Richmond defender David Astbury has called time on his AFL career.

The triple premiership Tiger will play his 155th and final game against Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday.

Astbury, a key pillar in Richmond’s premiership-winning defence, feels the time is right to bow out after 12 years at Punt Road.

“It really is a dream to be completely content with what my career consists of and be really proud of that,” he said in a club statement.

“I am really humbled by the football club wanting to keep me around, but I know this decision is right for me and for the club going forward.

“I am so proud that I have fulfilled my career and my dream at one club, this club.

“People say it is just a game, and they have got a point. It is a game. But that is not the reason that you do it. This group has delivered hope, purpose, connection and joy to our people - the Richmond people.

“It is really special, and I am proud of that.”

Astbury, 30, was selected with pick No.35 in the 2009 National Draft.

Meanwhile at Carlton, veteran utility Levi Casboult will depart Ikon Park at the conclusion of the season.

The Blues announced on Tuesday that Casboult, 31, won’t be offered a contract for next year.

Casboult has played 153 games for Carlton since being drafted as a rookie in 2010.

“The opportunity to call Carlton home and live out my boyhood dream over the past 12 years has been incredible,” he said in a club statement.

“To be departing the Club with Life Membership and after reaching the 150-game milestone earlier this year, is something I am incredibly proud of and am honoured to have been able to achieve.

“So many people at this football club have shown faith in me over the course of my career and I am extremely grateful for the support I have received, both internally from a staffing and player point of view, and externally from my family, friends and all Carlton members and supporters.”

Casboult was awarded life membership at Carlton last year.
