Blues should only consider sacking Teague if “game-changing” alternative is available

2021-08-12T14:39+10:00

Passionate Blues fan Andy Maher has given his thoughts on where the David Teague situation sits.

Carlton is set to hold a meeting on Thursday night to discuss the findings of the external review into the football department, with Teague’s future likely to be discussed.

Maher admits he isn’t entirely sure whether he thinks the right call is to move the coach on and feels they should only do so if Alastair Clarkson or Ross Lyon is available.

“He’s had a very difficult couple of years to find himself in that position and work his way through it,” Maher told SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“I don’t know necessarily whether it’s the right thing to do (to sack Teague) and it depends on who the alternative is.

“Here’s what I’d say, don’t sack David Teague if it’s not Alastair Clarkson or Ross Lyon.

“If you’re going to bring somebody else in whose reputation is not rock solid ... I don’t think you sack David Teague for Nathan Buckley. I don’t.

“It has to be a game-changing regime change. A bloke who will take us in a completely different direction and has got a history of turning things around and has got a track record of success, even though Ross hasn’t got a flag.

“I don’t think you move Teague aside for someone who hasn’t got that.”

When it was mentioned that sacking Teague for Clarkson or Lyon would be eerily similar to Carlton sacking Brett Ratten for Mick Malthouse in 2012, Maher said he felt at the time that club should have stuck with the existing coach.

“Can I say that I thought that was the wrong decision?” Maher added.

“If anybody can remember this radio station at the time, Robert Walls and I were the last two saying it was a bad decision.

“They should’ve done with Brett Ratten what they did with Mark Thompson at Geelong. Surrounded him with good people, focus on the job at hand, don’t spread yourself too wide, get back in there and coach, he’s a good footy coach.

“Surround him with the administrative support, bring a bloke in like Neil Balme.

“You could argue David Teague needs a stronger support team.

“The review might come out and say this bloke is actually pretty good, but you haven’t given him the support he needs. So give him the support he needs.”
