David King believes that there’s only “one likely outcome” for David Teague, and that the Carlton coach probably already knows it.
Fresh scrutiny towards Teague has come after the Blues lost a must-win game on the weekend, likely ending their finals hopes, while a football review is still being conducted at the club.
“It can be a horrible job can’t it … you sort of see what it’s done to David Teague,” King said on SEN's Whateley.
“You can see at times that he looks a beaten man and then other times you chat with him and think I feel sorry for this guy a bit, you know, he’s trying his hardest.
“He hasn’t really had much of an opportunity really, a couple of pre-seasons. You start with a broken product, all the talk was we’ve got to get them scoring, (but) he’s probably gone too far one way than the other.
“I don’t know if he’s had great assistance in terms of great intel and assistant coaches, I don’t know that. Time will tell where those guys resurface in AFL footy.
Despite potentially not having a fair chance at the role and possible lack of support, King believes that ripping the “band-aid” off sooner rather than later will be mutually beneficial for both Carlton and his former teammate.
“I feel for him as a former teammate of mine, but if you’re just going to look at what’s happening with this business, then there’s only one likely outcome and I think we all know that and I think David probably knows that… when you know, rip the band-aid off, it is better for all parties,” he said.
“It might be hard for Carlton to go for the next two games with a coach that they didn’t really want or a set up having already lost a couple of people from their footy department.
“It may be a bit ugly, but there’s nothing uglier than the slow death, nothing.”
