Carlton’s September dream is now officially over after losing to Gold Coast by 19 points at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.
Despite coming into the game as heavy favourites, the Blues again were unable to string consecutive wins together in what's becoming a clear trend under coach David Teague.
Having laid down the challenge to the Blues last week on Footy Classified to back up their strong win over St Kilda, AFL great Kane Cornes believes this loss re-iterated his thoughts that the side was “comfortable” with just one win.
“I said it last week, and I’ll say it again, this is a group that is comfortable,” Cornes said on AFL.com.au’s The Round So Far.
“Carlton is comfortable, and they get so excited by achieving nothing.”
Cornes feels the side lacks strong leadership due to their inability to produce any semblance of consistency on-field.
“There is a lack of leadership in that group, I’m talking from (Patrick) Cripps, from (Sam) Docherty, from all the way down that playing group, there is a lack of leadership from the top,” Cornes said.
“To think they could be happy with that Friday night win last week, to over-celebrate, and to serve that up against a team that kicked four goals last week against Melbourne is embarrassing.”
With finals out of the question, the Blues face Port Adelaide and GWS the season's final fortnight before resetting for 2022.
