Bellamy says MCG Grand Final would be “great for the code” in Victoria

Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy believes hosting the NRL Grand Final at the MCG would be a big boost to the code in Victoria.

Reports emerged on Sunday that the Victorian Government was making a play to host the premiership decider after missing out on Origin I, and the NRL is said to be seriously considering sending the event south.

Speaking to reporters following his side’s 37-10 win against Penrith, Bellamy endorsed the potential move.

“That’d be great for the code in Melbourne,” Bellamy said.

“To have a Grand Final there whether we’re in it or not would be great for the code in Melbourne.

“Obviously, it’d be a bit of a hoot for us too, all of our supporters (would be there).

“Having said that, being Melbourne Storm’s coach that’s a pretty exciting announcement that it might happen”

While Bellamy was excited about the idea of the Grand Final being hosted in his side’s home state, he ensured the Storm would be solely focused on making it to the big dance no matter where it’s held.

“Anything could happen with what’s been happening, but at the end of the day our biggest role is to continue to try and get there, that will be our biggest job,” Bellamy said.

“If that happens and it is played in Melbourne that’d be great.

“Having said that even if we didn’t make it, it’d be a big shot in the arm for rugby league in Melbourne.”

The NRL Grand Final is set for Sunday, October 3, eight days after the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, September 25.
