Boomers stun Team USA in Olympic exhibition game

2021-07-13T12:06+10:00

The Boomers have made a statement in Las Vegas, defeating Team USA in an Olympic exhibition game.

An elite NBA squad took the court for the Americans, led by Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard and Jayson Tatum, but it was the Aussies who got the result 91-83.

It’s the second loss in a row for Team USA after going down to Nigeria on Sunday.

Patty Mills led the way once again for the Boomers with 22 points, while Joe Ingles hit his shots, finishing with 17.

The concern for the Australians will be Aron Baynes, who sat out the final three quarters with a knee injury. The Toronto centre had ice on his knee sitting on the bench with the rest of the team.

Lillard and Durant combined for 39 points, but were clamped well in the second half by an outstanding Boomers defensive performance.

Matisse Thybulle was once again impressive, finishing with 12 points and starring on defence, blocking Durant in the last quarter.

Chris Goulding also impacted the scoreboard with 11 points, while Nick Kay and Jock Landale played heavy minutes in the absence of Baynes.

The Aussies now prepare for another warm-up game against Nigeria, with both nations looking to go 3-0 following wins over the USA and Argentina.
