St Kilda coach Brett Ratten admits he was unaware of Carlton’s approach to current assistant Aaron Hamill, but said he had no issue with him talking to other clubs.
Sportsday co-host Sam McClure revealed on Monday that the Blues had reached out to the out of contract Hamill as they look for a senior assistant coach to support David Teague.
Ratten said Hamill, who’s played with both Carlton and St Kilda, was a “great Saints person” and the club would work through the process with him.
“If you’re out of contract then you need security for your own family,” he said on Sportsday.
“I didn’t know Aaron had spoken to Carlton, but that’s his choice and he’s out of contract.
“We have a few people out of contract, but so do many clubs. He’s a great St Kilda person and we’ll work through that process.
“That’s the industry, like a player or coach you have to make sure your livelihood is there.
“We’re happy if people do that, but we haven’t made any decision there. He’s a great Saints person and been here for a while, so we’ll work through that.”
It was reported last week that Carlton had also sounded out Chris Newman as a potential candidate for the role.
