Legendary coach would resign if he was in Teague's position

The pressure is mounting on Carlton coach David Teague, with his job appearing far from certain as the Blues undergo a mid-season external review of their football department.

Matthew Pavlich, one of three people selected to conduct the external review, revealed that Teague’s position will be under the microscope despite outgoing Blues president Mark LoGiudice suggesting otherwise.

Carlton’s loss to GWS was their ninth of the season in what has been a dismal campaign, after they were tipped by many to challenge for a finals spot.

Four-time premiership coach Leigh Matthews says he would quit his post if he was in Teague’s situation.

“My response would be, ‘Thank you very much, my time is up’,” Matthews told Sportsday.

“That’s my response, it’s an individual thing. If there was a big in-depth review taking place on the area you’re responsible for then I think you say, ‘Thank you, my time is up. You haven’t got the faith in me anymore, so my time is up’.”

“Internal reviews are happening all the time, but if you want to make it a public, external review you’re basically saying to the whole senior management, ‘You guys don’t know what you’re talking about, we need other people to come in and judge what you’re doing’.

“What I find amazing is that the coaching panels you would think are appointed by the senior coach in a sense. The coaching panel is the responsibility of the senior coach. If the coaching panel isn’t good enough then the senior coach has to be part of the process of changing them. It’s your group.

“Because it’s now about a coaching panel to coach. It’s not just the era of the senior coach, that was gone a long time ago. In full-time footy it’s a group of coaches that are charged with getting the best out of the team.

“If the senior coach hasn’t got total say on who those assistants are, it’s the same principle: Shouldn’t be in the job.”

Teague, 40, is contracted for another season at Ikon Park.
