“Zac Williams is one of the laziest footballers going around at the moment”: Brown

2021-06-22T08:22+10:00

Brisbane great Jonathan Brown was scathing in his assessment of Carlton defender Zac Williams on Monday night.

Williams was poor in the Blues’ loss to his old side GWS on the weekend, finishing the game with 11 disposals.

Brown however pointed to the defensive elements of the 26-year-old’s game, saying he is nowhere near fit enough and gets exposed by his opponents.

“I tell you what, Zac Williams is one of the laziest footballers going around at the moment,” Brown told Fox Footy.

“There’s about 100 pieces of vision left on the cutting room floor. We could have gone through it for the next half an hour and we could have really, really hurt his reputation.

“So I’m just verballing it for you. He’s come to the Carlton Football Club, paid that sort of money, he needs to turn up in better shape and get himself fit and turn up and put in a better effort, especially on defence.”

Former Essendon captain Tim Watson gave his reaction to Brown’s comments on Tuesday morning, saying Williams is now feeling the heat of playing for a big Victorian club.

“That was severe criticism. He’s never had this type of scrutiny before in his career, Zac Williams,” Watson told SEN Breakfast.

“He thought probably that he’ll come down to Melbourne, he’ll play in the midfield, he’ll just dissolve into this team.

“They’re going really badly and everyone is going to look at those players getting the bag after shifting to Carlton and not performing.”

A Round 1 suspension and niggling injury issues impacted Williams’ season early, but his time in the Carlton midfield was cut short early on.

He was moved to his usual half-back spot and has remained inconsistent with his performance.
