The star free agent who would be a perfect fit for Port Adelaide

2021-05-12T12:49+10:00

Kane Cornes sees Zach Merrett as a perfect free agency target for Port Adelaide.

Merrett is out of contract at the end of the season and has made the call to delay talks with the Bombers until later in the season.

Given the Power have a few ageing stars in Travis Boak and Robbie Gray, as well as the likes of Tom Rockliff and Hamish Hartlett in the twilight of their careers, Cornes believes his old club should attempt to make a splash for someone like Merrett.

“He said he needs to see more from the Bombers before he commits to his future,” Cornes told SEN SA Breakfast.

“That would have me a little bit nervous if I was an Essendon fan, but it does open up the door for Port Adelaide.

“We know they are one of four clubs really interested in Merrett.

“I think he is absolutely a fit. They’ve got the money to be able to get him.

“Would he move to Adelaide, I’m not sure, but could Port get even stronger next year after Aliir Aliir and Orazio Fantasia and the excellent recruiting they’ve done from other clubs.

“With Travis Boak getting on and Robbie Gray getting on, he’s the perfect fit for their midfield.”

Merrett has had an outstanding 2021 season so far, averaging 31 disposals, seven inside 50s and six score involvements per game.
