James Tamou on how Ivan Cleary and Michael Maguire differ in their approach

2021-05-04T10:58+10:00

James Tamou has compared the coaching styles of Penrith's Ivan Cleary and the Tigers' Michael Maguire.

Tamou has captained under both coaches throughout his career, first at Penrith with Cleary and now at the Tigers with Maguire, with the two having different styles according to the prop-forward.

Coming off the back of a well fought win against the Dragons, Tamou discussed the difference between the two coaches on SEN 1170’s Breakfast with Vossy.

“The one thing I did notice is that 'Madge' (Michael Maguire) is very vocal, and very colourful,” he said.

“You can just tell that he can hold a room really well, everyone's listening and he gets the boys up.

Tamou pointed out the biggest trait that separates Ivan Cleary from his Tigers counterpart.

“Ivan is quite the opposite, he’ll just sit back during the week at training and come in when he needs to, at captain's run and during the game,” Tamou explained.

“That just goes to show his words have more weight.

“When he talks, you know you have to listen, because you know it’s going to be good.

However, the Tigers skipper did point out that the coaches are quite similar when it comes to the brains behind their coaching operations.

“Looking over it, they both had the same brain when it comes to the game," Tamou said.

“Both teams sort of do the same sort of moves, same sort of structures and all that."
