Cornes urges Power to target young Suns in trade period

2021-04-20T08:43+10:00

Kane Cornes has urged Port Adelaide to pursue South Australian pair Izak Rankine and Jack Lukosius.

Gold Coast continues to struggle, sitting 15th on the ladder following their Round 5 drubbing at the hands of the Western Bulldogs.

As the Suns’ players continue to play in losses, will we see their young stars depart for other clubs as they have in the past?

Matthew Lloyd believes their recent top draftees will be having the same thoughts as the likes of Tom Lynch, Steven May, Dion Prestia, Charlie Dixon, Jack Martin, Josh Caddy, Jaeger O’Meara and others who departed the club.

“When you’re 11 goals down at half-time, you start to ask the question of yourself as a young player,” Lloyd told Footy Classified.

“All talented footballers would have mates playing at better clubs in front of big crowds and when you’re losing time and time and time again, that’s why Steven May and Tom Lynch left the football club.”

Cornes agreed, saying a team like Port Adelaide should be knocking on the doors of the Suns’ South Australian youngsters.

“When they see the guys they were drafted with playing on the MCG in front of 50,000 and playing finals,” he added.

I know Port Adelaide has been linked to Zach Merrett and these types of players, but I would be going that hard after Izak Rankine and Jack Lukosius as a Port Adelaide fan saying ‘we’ll get you back, you’ll play in front of 35,000, we’re going to have success for the next five years, it’s better than being up there losing every week and turning up to training depressed and playing in front of 6,000’.”

Both Rankine and Lukosius are contracted with Gold Coast until the end of 2022.

Gold Coast hosts Sydney in Round 6 with the chance to get their season back on track.
