Dead for eight minutes: Rugby league legend opens up on horrific heart attack

Rugby league legend Garry Jack has opened up on a horrific heart attack that he suffered in January.

The 60-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest which left him lifeless for eight minutes before a friend revived him with nine minutes of CPR.

Jack joined SEN 1170’s Breakfast with Vossy to share his story that he believes people need to hear.

“On the 22nd of January I was training in Castle Hill,” he said.

“I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I've done that for 20 years just to keep fit as I’m getting older.

“I was doing a warm up and as I went to go grab a partner, I just collapsed on the ground.

“I wasn’t breathing, there was no heart rate.

“I was dead.”

Garry then explained the next critical minutes that saved his life.

“(My friend) Simon commenced CPR straight away,” he said.

“He did it for nine minutes to keep me alive before the paramedics turned up.

“He just didn’t give up on me.

“If it weren’t for that CPR, I wouldn’t be here.

“I’m just so blessed to be here today.

Jack opened up on his lifestyle and how shocked he was that he suffered a heart attack despite all the precautions that he has taken.

“I’ve been fit, I look after myself.

“I watch what I eat, I watch what I drink.

“For it to come out of the blue, it stunned me to the core.

“I had no symptoms at all, in fact I had been seeing a cardiologist for the past three years.

“I had done stress a test and the doctors said that I’m doing fantastic.

“And then 12 months later look what happens.

“But I didn't remember anything until the next night at about six o’clock.

“I remember everything since then, but there were 24 hours where I don’t remember a thing.”
