Andy Maher has had enough with AFL coaches wanting to control the game.
With news that the league is set to introduce an injury substitute for the 2021 season at the behest of the coaches, the SEN host has called them out for their attitude towards footy.
“They want everything their own way. They want it perfect,” Maher told SEN’s Bob and Andy.
“If a player gets injured, they want to replace him. This is a game of chaos and unpredictability and luck.
“I’m looking at this very much through the eyes of the fans. This is the game we get most invested in and they’re mucking around with it.
“That is a welfare decision (bringing in a concussion substitute) and I think we were getting our heads around that and now it becomes a medical one.
“And now they’re saying ‘if we lose one for concussion and then another bloke breaks his leg what do we do then? Give us another player’.
“Come on. Stop.
“And then (Damien Hardwick) goes ‘if a big bloke goes off I want to bring a big bloke on and if a back pocket goes off I want to be able to bring a small defender on’, it’s just ridiculous.”
The AFL will officially confirm whether they are going ahead with a concussion/injury sub on Tuesday evening.
