AFL CEO hints at broader implementation of concussion sub

2021-03-16T09:30+11:00

AFL Gillon McLachlan has hinted that the proposed player substitute rule could be broader than just concussion.

The AFL is expected to confirm on Tuesday whether a concussion sub will be introduced for the 2021 season that would see line-ups extended to 23 players.

It means an extra player will sit on the bench in readiness to replace a concussed teammate if, of course, that was to occur.

When asked on SEN’s Whateley whether he expects it to be a broader implementation, McLachlan replied: “I think it’s more likely than not, yep.”

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson told SEN Breakfast on Monday that all 18 coaches were “nearly unanimous” in their push for a concussion sub.

“Steve Hocking has been working through it with the doctors, who I think had widespread and strong support," McLachlan said.

“Clearly, it’s going to be finalised today, but we’re working through it with all the groups.

“What I stress is it’s about health and safety and if we can make the game one or two per cent safer, we’ll do it.

“It’s not a change in the rules, the players and umpires won’t have to learn anything different on the field … a sub at the right time – not strategic – but for health and safety issues.

“Clearly it started as a concussion sub. If it’s deemed as taking a player out, is it appropriate to widen it? That’s what’s being worked through with the clubs and doctors.”
