Will the NZ Warriors have to relocate to Australia for the 2021 season?

2021-03-01T10:40+11:00

In light of another lockdown in Auckland after just one new community case in the capital city. It looks like the New Zealand Warriors will be relocated to Australia for the entire season.

Auckland has been in a snap lockdown since Sunday morning which is set to last another six days.

Andrew Voss and Glen Larmer expressed their concerns for the Kiwi club's season on SEN 1170’s Breakfast with Vossy.

“I don’t see how the Warriors can get home,” said Voss.

“I don’t see how the competition can go all year with the Warriors going between countries.

“I think they’re in Australia for the year.”

Larmer pointed out the strict approach that the NZ Government takes when it comes to COVID restricitons. The Australian versus New Zealand T20 match was moved to Wellington and will be played without fans.

“There's one other thing I can’t quite get my head around, I don’t think we’ve had a case outside of Auckland for several months, but the Government still goes down this very cautious path,” said Larmer.

“They’ve banned crowds of 100 anywhere else in New Zealand.

“Wellington is 1000km away from Auckland… but that’s the decision they’ve made.

“The big problem is that the quarantine rules here don't look like they’re going to be dropped anytime soon.

“Sadly, I think the Warriors are going to have to do it tough, they’re going to have to suck it up in Australia for the whole year.”

Netball is yet another sport to be added to the playing behind closed doors list as it was anounced that the Australia versus New Zealand Conestellation Cup tests will be played in Christchurch without fans.
