The rolling hierarchy of the best horses in Australia

2021-02-16T13:25+11:00

Gerard Whateley and Andrew Bensley have rated their Top 5 horses in Australia at this present moment.

Ahead of another massive weekend of racing which includes the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield and the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill, a rolling hierarchy has been put together.

Whateley has a keen eye on the most elite gallopers with the some of the best horses either already resumed racing or set to resume in the coming weeks.

“It’s key in racing that we have a hierarchy, a pecking order,” he said.

“Who are the best horses in the country at any given time.

“We had the years where it was a default. We had Black Caviar and we had Winx. We had incredible stability in racing.

“It’s not really supposed to be like that. It’s supposed to chop and change.”

Whateley’s Top 5

  1. Verry Elleegant
  2. Russian Camelot
  3. Bivouac
  4. Nature Strip
  5. Ole Kirk

Whateley says: “We wait to see Arcadia Queen and I do think September Run’s performance in the Lightning screams Newmarket.

“I expect this (list) will adjust pretty consistently.”

Bensley’s Top 5

  1. Nature Strip
  2. Verry Elleegant
  3. Profiteer
  4. Bivouac
  5. Arcadia Queen

Bensley says: “I’m going to go with what we’re seeing right now, off what we’ve seen so far.

“The other one I’m going to keep a big eye on is Addeybb From William Haggas’ stable.

“He could end up being the Sydney distance horse of the autumn.”
