NRL considers huge rule change to halt player movement

2020-12-02T08:40+11:00

The Australian Rugby League Commission will meet on Wednesday to propose a new rule that will have huge ramifications on NRL player movement.

The proposed rule will forbid players from breaking contract to sign for more money at a rival club, reports Paul Kent from The Daily Telegraph.

The issue has come to light in recent days, with the Wests Tigers Josh Aloiai forcing his way to Manly despite a year to run on his contract in 2021.

1170 SEN’s Andrew Voss agrees with the proposal in principle, but understands why players seek moves for higher wages.

In contrast, The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio loves the idea, telling Voss that players breaking contracts has become rife in the game.

“I absolutely love this, I really do,” Riccio said on 1170 SEN Breakfast.

“It’s based on excuses as far as players are concerned when they want to get out of their contract.

“They have a good season, they want to go elsewhere, and they call on family reasons that they need to get out of i.e, the Dragons, the Sharks or the Tigers and move to Manly, the Titans or the Broncos."

Riccio doesn't believe the proposed rule will completely halt player movement, but instead bring it back to an acceptable level.

“I think this will not stop the rapid player movement that we see, but it’ll certainly limit it that’s for certain," he addded.

“I really like this, I’m looking forward to the commission coming back with a response.”
