North Melbourne open to offers for pick 2

2020-11-17T09:32+11:00

North Melbourne is open to offers for their prized pick two in the upcoming National Draft.

Despite the trade period closing, teams are allowed to trade picks any time between now and the end of the draft which takes place on December 9.

Despite a lot of unknowns about the Victorian players available, the top of the talent pool looms strong and the Roos are willing to make a move if a good offer comes their way according to Head of Player Personnel Scott Clayton.

“It wouldn’t be beyond the realms (of possibility),” Clayton told SEN Breakfast.

“We’ve got a very open mind in regards to what’s best for us and we’re looking at this draft and next year. Our major platform for the next two years is that.

“We are looking at all options and we have been from day one. We did attempt to look at that during this period and tried to get the Western Bulldogs’ first rounder and many things we planned and had a go at, some worked, some don’t.

“We have got an open mind and we’ll discount nothing.”

With question marks over Victorian players given most haven’t played footy this year, Clayton said North Melbourne is eyeing off supplemental draft opportunities to pick out any late bloomers that emerge.

“That’s why there’s talk, there will be the Supplemental Selection Period in the pre-season, and there is talk of a mid-season draft, which we’re very supportive of,” he said.

“It could be the best mid-season draft of all-time given there’s half a state we haven’t seen and you wonder where they get to.”

North Melbourne made the decision to part with 11 players earlier in the year and Clayton said the potential for multiple draft opportunities was part of their thinking.

“That was in our thinking when planning for our numbers. We want to be in all those opportunities, so once we knew list sizes were coming down we knew there might be opportunity pre-season and mid-season to add to our list and accordingly we made the call on our numbers,” he said.

The Kangaroos added Jaidyn Stephenson, Atu Bosenavulagi and Lachie Young in the trade period as well as Aidan Corr as a free agent.

They hold picks 2, 11, 30, 39, 71 and 81 in the upcoming National Draft.
