Essendon prepared to walk new recruit through pre-season draft

2020-11-05T14:35+11:00

Essendon could walk GWS midfielder Jye Caldwell to the pre-season draft if a suitable trade can’t be reached, according to SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund.

The 20-year-old recently requested a trade to the Bombers, with both clubs currently locked in trade talks to thrash out a deal.

Edmund reports that Essendon has offered up a future second round pick for the on-baller, with the Giants holding out for a better deal.

In a significant development, Edmund said Caldwell could land up making his way to the Bombers through the pre-season draft if the two clubs can’t agree to a trade, leaving the Giants with nothing.

“Essendon has offered a future second round pick for Jye Caldwell,” he said on AFL Trade Radio’s Trade Afternoons.

“GWS has told Essendon they want more, Essendon are now saying take it or leave it, and if you leave it then 'we’ll walk Caldwell to the pre-season draft'.

“A future second is not a bad pick … it just happens that the club is at the centre of so many deals.”

Caldwell has played 11 games for the Giants since being taken with pick 11 in the 2018 National Draft.

Similarly, Edmund reported that Carlton is willing to walk Adam Saad to the pre-season draft if the Bombers don’t wish to play ball on a trade.
