Will this “much loved” Giants “superstar” stay at GWS?

2020-09-02T11:16+10:00

Former GWS footy boss Wayne Campbell suggests Leon Cameron is usually pretty spot on with his gut feelings about Giants players who are linked with potential exits from the club.

Zac Williams is the latest high-profile Giant whose name has landed in trade circles with the likes of Carlton, Essendon, North Melbourne and St Kilda all being mentioned.

However, GWS coach Cameron recently said that “we are confident he is going to be a Giant for life” which indicates to Campbell that the skilful rebounding defender will remain in orange and charcoal for the foreseeable future.

Campbell, who saw Williams first-hand during his time with GWS, has also rated the 25-year-old as a “superstar” such is the esteem with which he is held within the club.

“I’m a bit biased but maybe I’m biased because I’ve seen him more than what others have,” he said on SEN’s Bob & Andy.

“But he’s a star. I think he’s a superstar.

“He’s just unique. Zac going from half-back into the midfield and not missing a beat, there’s not too many that do that.

“Andrew McLeod used to do it. He used to do it after half-time and blow the game away. I’m not saying Zac is quite at his level just yet because he (McLeod) was a serious player.

“He’s tough, he’s a good decision maker, he wins one on ones, and he’s flexible because he can go and play mid.

“I heard Leon the other day and he sounded pretty confident that he would stay and he’s got a pretty good strike record. When his gut feel is they stay, they tend to stay.”

Campbell added that Williams is a highly revered figure at the club which could be a further factor in him remaining a Giant.

“He’s much loved as a teammate,” he added.

“When they do what they do like he does on the big stage that sort of elevates them a little bit in the group.

“He’s just a good young fella. A good story for the academy and New South Wales. He’s from Narrandera in the Riverina. Indigenous boy who had an upbringing where Kevin Sheedy grabbed hold of him and said I’m going to give you a chance.”

Williams, who was initially selected with pick 54 in the 2013 Rookie Draft, has played 110 games for the Giants since debuting seven years ago.
