Lyon and Watson support shifting 2020 Grand Final to WA on one proviso

2020-06-23T08:27+10:00

Garry Lyon would support moving the 2020 AFL Grand Final to Western Australia if crowds are still banned in Victoria come season’s end.

The WA government announced on Monday that up to 30,000 people can attend games in Perth from this Saturday that could rise to 60,000 from July 18.

Lyon would prefer to see the Grand Final played in front of a full house at Optus Stadium instead of an empty MCG.

“Under normal circumstances I’m a massive supporter of that (Grand Final played at the MCG),” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“But if Western Australia can have a 60,000-capacity stadium and we (Victoria) can’t … a less than full MCG versus a chock-a-block Optus Stadium in Perth, move it for a year.

“That’s just the easiest thing to do for me.

“They’ll stack it out. If they have the Grand Final over in Perth, irrespective of who it is, the Giants could play the Lions and I reckon they’d jam it full. No-brainer, sell out.”

Tim Watson is also open to shifting the Grand Final to Perth if a mass crowd can be accommodated.

“I support that. If they can’t have a big crowd at the MCG and they can have a full house of 60,000 people over there at Perth, I support that wholeheartedly,” Watson said.

The MCG is contracted to host the premiership decider until at least the end of 2057.
