Report: AFL season hits “stumbling block” in bid to restart

2020-05-05T05:00+10:00

Western Australia’s strict border restrictions could see West Coast and Fremantle temporarily relocate to Melbourne when the league starts again in the coming months, according to The Age.

The report says Western Australia’s restrictions are the latest “stumbling block” the AFL is currently working through as they look to formalise plans to resume the 2020 season.

High-level meetings continued to be held on Monday between individual states.

South Australia are expected to lift their state border restrictions in the coming weeks but Western Australia’s border control appears to be stricter, which could see two clubs play a bank of away games in Victoria at the start of the season.

Clubs are still unable to train in more than groups of two under ‘Stage A’ restrictions, although they could be eased in the coming days to ‘Stage B’ if Victoria comes out of a state of emergency on Monday.

Under ‘Stage B’, players could train in groups of 10 with no physical contact.

The league will next week name a restart date for the season, which was suspended in March after just one round was played.
